Fake notes warning issued by police

Evan Warrander

Police Scotland has issued a warning after counterfeit banknotes were reported in circulation across Ayrshire.

Officers say they are aware of forged notes being used in the area and are urging cash handlers to remain vigilant.

Businesses, shop workers and members of the public are being encouraged to carefully check notes before accepting them.

Police have also highlighted the risks for people selling items through social media platforms, warning that fraudsters may attempt to use counterfeit currency when making purchases.

Officers recommend checking for spelling errors, altered wording, damaged or incorrect holograms, unusual serial numbers and missing watermarks.

Anyone who believes they have received a fake note is asked to contact police by calling 101.
