Irvine hosts annual John Galt lecture celebrating literary legacy

Evan Warrander

Irvine has marked the legacy of one of its most famous historical figures with the annual John Galt Lecture.

The event, held at the Wellwood Burns Centre and Museum, celebrated the life of the novelist, poet and entrepreneur, who was born in the town in 1779. This year’s lecture was delivered by a guest speaker from the University of Edinburgh.

A small ceremony also took place at the John Galt plaque on Irvine High Street, where flowers were laid to mark the anniversary of his birth and recognise his lasting contribution to Scottish literature.
